Mixed feelings 3.5*

On the positive side, I finished the book and wanted to. It was thought provoking, although possibly not always for reasons intended by the author.
The two main characters were little more than annoyingly pathetic for most of the book. They did improve towards the end. I found it unconvincing that both of them, after getting to know each other the way they did, would then proceed with their ‘relationship’ the way they did for so many years. It was ridiculous and stuck out as a gimmick employed by the author. The same idea worked much more effectively in ‘One Day’.
If I’d known the book was written in the present tense I wouldn’t have bought it. This can be effective in the right context but just wasn’t necessary here and merely seemed pretentious and frequently distractingly clunky.
At times the dialogue didn’t work for me, seeming unnatural, which was also distracting. I remember one quite intense conversation between a couple where three major topics were covered in about three sentences. I’m not going to try to find it again to check the details but it was something like that.
Surely Penguin wouldn’t allow typos to get into a book they publish but I think I spotted three or four wrongly used words. Normally the occasional mistake wouldn’t bother me but because other things in the book were annoying me, these did.

Absolutely loved it!!

This is the first book I’ve read from this author and I had been slightly unsure based on the mixed reviews but when I read the sample I simply couldn’t not finish it! It had me going through all of the emotions, had me thinking and had me gripped from beginning to end. I love the characters and their story. I will a million percent be reading more from Roxie in the future!

Unfair

I actually didn’t like the characters in this book. While I’m all for a love story, this felt unfair and l found myself not liking or agreeing with their actions over the course of 10 years and I was never really rooting for them the way I wanted to. Also agree with other reviews as I too felt the ending unnecessary and only dramatic to add an extra something that just wasn’t needed.
