Jo Thomas’ novels have seen romances blossom and lives rejuvenate everywhere from Provence to Swedish Lapland—but she might have outdone herself with the setting of this year’s release. To Iceland, where executive chef Freya and her best friends have travelled to honour the late Laura, whose dream was to see the Northern Lights on her 40th birthday. You can tell from the very first pages that this will be easier said than done, and the trio (along with a small village) are soon forced to fend for themselves under the guidance of the mysterious and, of course, handsome Pétur. While most Christmas romances are backdropped by dustings of snow and conveniently frozen-over lakes, Keeping a Christmas Promise details a brutal Icelandic winter where everyone must pull together—and take care to not irritate the elves in doing so. Thomas says she has been enchanted by Iceland for years and it really shows in her writing, which is a love letter to food, friends and Icelandic festivities.

Clever
This book isn’t one of those schmalzy stories about Christmas. The relationships in particular between the friends are genuine as some real moving moments. I liked the natural succession of events and the writing style. A success story out of some stark realities in the hospitality world. An example of how new beginnings can surge out of difficult situations and most of all about hope.
