Having authored well over 100 books, few can connect with young readers in quite the same way Jacqueline Wilson does so effortlessly, time and time again. It’s not the first time she’s taken readers back in time, and fans of The Lottie Project and Hetty Feather will have an idea of what to expect with The Runaway Girls, set in Victorian London in 1851. The very wealthy Lucy Locket and orphaned street performer Kitty Fisher couldn’t have less in common but find themselves navigating survival on the streets with only each other for company after Lucy runs away from her nasty New Mother and neglectful father. It’s a fun and educational read for children, but also sensitively deals with some heavier issues that older readers will pick up on.
